A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Gules, on a pile Argent throughout, in chief within a wreath of laurel Vert a bridge bent Sable and in base a fleur-de-lis of the first; a bordure of the second. Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Silver scroll inscribed ASSIGNE ACCOMPLIRONS in Black letters.
The descent of the organization from the 345th Engineer Regiment (General Service), Organized Reserves, is indicated by the use of the shield of the coat of arms of that organization, differenced by a border, and modified by the substitution of a bridge bent for the hammer and addition of a fleur-de-lis. The colors are scarlet and white for Engineers. The functions of the organization are symbolized by the wedge-shape pile, representative of penetration into enemy territory, and by the bridge bent. The wreath of laurel represents valor and the fleur-de-lis is for service in Europe during World War II. The motto translates to Give Us The Job, Well Do It.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 83d Engineer Construction Battalion on 15 July 1952. It was redesignated for the 83d Engineer Battalion on 7 October 1957.
